I'm just a fat gal with a blog and an opinion. Well, lots of opinions.

What Comfort Zone?

You ever do something that surprises even you? Yeah, I did that! I had considered entering a model contest, for the club I go to about once a month, but chose not to…until yesterday (the last day for entries)! I entered my info, answers to cool fatty questions and pictures. And hit submit! WHAT?! I know!!! What?! I don’t know what I was thinking, but it really doesn’t matter. I mean, it’s a fun idea and if I get picked, awesome. If I don’t? No biggie. I just can’t believe I did it at all!

I have been really pushing back on the ideas of presentation and how women are “supposed to look” and all of that bullshit. I generally don’t do things like wear make up or high heels or anything one could identify with a model. But shit, dude, I can break down those standards of beauty and flaunt my own version of it! I can be a model and a bad ass, right? Secretly, being a model for something/anything is on my bucket list. So is joining a book club…and tonight I might just fulfill both! A good friend invited me to join her book club and after some questions I accepted! Woo!

I am all about getting the hell out of my comfort zone lately and repeating the phrase, “Why Not?!” So, can I be sexy in Doc Martens? You bet your sweet Asparcreme I can! (I miss those ads, always cracked me up!) And if I don’t get into the semi-finals or finals or whatever, so be it! I tried! Ha-ha! Today is about possibilities. Tonight is about fun with my gals! Right now is about nourishing my body with these  lovely fresh blueberry scones (Trader Joe’s Freezer Section, yo!) and espresso! YUM!

I am nearly done decorating my piggy for Love Your Body Day and have been surprised at how much fun I’m having while doing it. At one point I had it all planned out, something flubbed and now I swear to you it is creating itself! My ideas? Out the window! This piggy knows what she wants! My hands are merely the instruments she’s chosen to beautify herself into her truest and most authentic form (sparkly)!!! And then I shall be sewing/repairing the dress I’d like to wear to the club tonight! Woo! I’m terrible at sewing, but luckily the repair is on the seam and that should be about what I can manage. I had meant to do it yesterday, but piggy demanded more of my attention! Ha-ha!

It’s Friday and I’m in Love…with The Cure! I heard “Fascination Street” in the car yesterday and have been listening to their best of ever since…non-stop (okay, I slept)! They are so great! I can’t even handle their greatness! I’ve fallen for them all over again. I love when that happens! Like a couple of years ago and I “discovered” The Pixies! Oh man, one of the best bands ever! I’d just never been introduced to them back in the day. Oh well, still plenty o’ time to love! Now to start my own band…another bucket list item for sure!

Tomorrow we visit our local Renaissance Faire! We have a bogo coupon and the weather should be just right! Woo!

What are you stoked about today or this weekend? What was the last thing you did outside of your comfort zone that you’re glad you did? I wanna hear all about it! Let’s celebrate something, shall we?! Woo!

Not Blue At All by writing this blog you are already the most important kind of model: a role model how does it get to be any more super than that x

Well, a couple weeks ago I went to a show Mr. Twistie was playing with one of the bands he’s in and I got up and danced with a parrot on my shoulder. I don’t do a lot of dance parties/bar gigs. Between the fact I don’t drink, the fact these places are usually lit very low, and the fact that I go nightblind… there just isn’t that much point for me, usually. But I came along to this one because all the guys in the band were bringing along their wives (and then the percussionist’s girlfriend of goodness alone knows how many years left him two days before the gig! OUCH!) and I thought it would be fun to talk to the other women with the band. They’re an awesome group of ladies with all kinds of talent and quirky humor, after all.

Anyway, the place had a tropical theme going and someone brought in a pair of parrots. I’d never held a bird before, but one of the birds took a liking to me and just hopped on my shoulder and I was so stoked, I found myself dancing in the dark with a parrot.

What’s not to love about that? Also? Nobody died. Or fell over due to my dancing when I couldn’t see a damn thing. There were a couple spills in the course of the night, but one was a case of extreme drunkenness combined with stiletto heels and the other was some shit-for-brains thinking that taking a bouncy walk across a sea of folding chairs was a smart thing to do.

As for the piggie taking over… that’s when the best creativity happens; when you feel more like a conduit than a creator. It’s an amazing feeling, isn’t it?

Best of luck with the modeling contest and the book club! I would totally hire you to model for me, because your smile is infectious and your enthusiasm is seemingly boundless.

Besides, you do happen to be cuter than a bug in a rug. So there.

@Twistie: Wow! Dancing with a parrot? That is downright impressive! Woo Hoo to you!!! And yeah, this conduit thing is nice! I think the piggy is done with me now…but we’ll see! Thanks for the luck, I’m not putting too much stock in it, just for fun and all. Thanks for saying I’m cuter than a bug in a rug! Too funny! <3

If you love ’80s inspired great pop music, you must check out Brit band the Horrors. Especially their 2009 album, Primary Colours.

    @thirtiesgirl: I had that album, actually! Ha-ha!

I am actually celebrating this odd milestone of stepping outside my comfort zone this afternoon.

My boss and a client were flying home today on Southworst, which they loved, and wondered why I was flying on USAir. I mentioned I wasn’t thrilled with their discrimination of late, and that I am happier elsewhere at a good value. THEN…got a first class upgrade, and…..had to ask for the foredreaded seatbelt extender for the first time ever.. Which I did confidently and sprightly, and received in one hand, with free drink in other.
Yes, oh, yes. Attitude is everything. I refuse to be afraid about this. F’em if they don’t cater to my big ass and business. And you know what? It’s OK. I’m still never going to risk the treatment I might get boarding a plane in sweats with no makeup, but it’s still OK.

Believe it or not, I am pretty pleased with myself. And thanking my friends in the fatosphere for making it easier to be so.

@Chutti: Woo Hoo! Upgrade + Free drink? NICE! You know how to do it, gurl! I love it! Live it up! The more people hear and see us standing up for ourselves, appearing confident or simply not taking people’s shit, the more normalized fat will be!

    I. LOVE. Fascination Street. And modeling is a great idea. The more we can push the idea that we are variants of normal, and still as lovely, the better off we will all be. Enjoy the ren fest! We try to make our local one every year, it’s just fantastic. It’s more expensive than some of my favorite cons, but those are great fun!

@E. Ai B.: Thank you! I didn’t make it into the semi-finals, but no biggie. I was still just pleased I had the courage to enter! Ha-ha! <3

Ah, the Cure. Good college memories. That’s riding in the car with the windows down and that giddy-feeling music.

@Shieldmaiden1196: Yep, you got it, babe! =0)
