90’s style!
You ever get ready to go out but don’t wanna fuss or anything and truly you just wanna be comfortable? I think we have all been there in some way, right? Well, last Monday night I was getting ready to go to karaoke with my BFFs and I just wasn’t in the mood to dress up. I was already wearing a perfectly comfortable t-shirt and jeans, why fuck with a good thing? So I threw on a necklace and a vest and this neat-o feather thingy I got at Joann’s and just went with it. The feather thingy sort of looks like a little flower, but it’s feathers, so it looked like a casual boutineer. I was feeling quite fabulous actually. This insta-outfit was almost exactly “my style”. I popped on a couple of bracelets before heading downstairs and ta-da!
I’d wanted a classic black vest for years and finally found one a couple of months ago at Kohl’s of all places! I had a ten dollar off coupon and was shocked when the vest actually buttoned up! I wore it with my costume for Halloween this year, but this is my first attempt at rocking it classic old school 90’s style, yo! What do you think? I still like it, though I’m not as in love with the outfit now that I’m not wearing it. The necklace was on clearance at Avenue, the t-shirt is old navy from about 3 years ago, the jeans are Avenue Denim Lite straight leg-discontinued, and I’m wearing my not-yet-famous-but-totes-should-be five dollar doc martens. They’re a size too big, but for five bucks including shipping? I couldn’t say no…and they’re so comfy!
I’m so over other people’s expectations anyway, this outfit to me says exactly that. This is who I am, take me or leave me, that’s your choice, man.
What outfit makes you feel this way? Are you secretly wanting to rock a style you’ve never tried before? What’s stopping you?
1. 1950s pinup girl
2. Something wildly fashionable … I normally try for classy/cute, but I think doing something absolutely wild for a change might be fun. The pink/maroon outfit I’m wearing on my latest post is almost it. But I was thinking maybe something with tons of color, but somehow all works without being too overwhelming.
For 1 the size/money thing is stopping me. My boobs are to big for the plus size dresses versions of the clothes … maybe if I work really hard and lose 10 pounds I could do it.
For 2 my complete lack of hip fashion sense stops me.
Larissa: Firstly, there is no way to lose lbs in just your boobs! I know lots of ladies who would love to do just that. But we’re talking about self-acceptance here. There is always a way to get around this stuff! Pinup clothes? I’m with you! I love the style, even rockabilly, but I can never seem to find what would work for my shape. Have you seen Psycho Sue’s blog? She rocks it like no other: sew-misunderstood.blogspot.com she is my heroine! Also, I don’t think a size 18 is too hard to find. My opinion, mind you, but I see gorgeously cute stuff on modcloth.com and http://modemerr.com/ and http://www.pinupgirlclothing.com/ and tons on etsy and eBay and more. In fact I think once you hit a size 24 or 26 is when you start to lose options. I am in no way shaming or judging you, hun, I just know how it feels to think there’s nothing out there for you and then have someone sort of open this metaphoric door of fatshion wonder! And let’s not leave out Eshakti.com, my love affair with dresses galore! They have some very swingy-pin up ish stuff from time to time. Fun, too! And they do custom sizing for 7 bucks, you just cannot beat that!
As for “hip” fashion sense? Psshht! ! ! Like I have that? Nope! And I don’t even care. I rock what feels good and what I think looks good. The rest can worry about their damned selves. Ha-ha!
I am infamous for having themed outfits 40’s style is my favourite closely followed by Rock Chick chic. I recently bought a vintage snood it is gorgeous I love clothes.
I love your vest btw.
WHERE DID YOU GET $5 DMS FROM?!! Share woman!
The amount I have spent…
Christine: that was my luckiest ebay buy yet! I am known for my bargain hunting and ebay skills. It’s all about waiting.but yeah, give bucks.
Aren’t those outfits great? For me it’s usually a maxi dress and sandals. No effort, lovely and cool and easy to launder.
Kath: I’ve seen you in a maxi dress and sandals and I think it suits you perfectly.
Aww, thank you dearest!
